MRSA already beat this antibiotic. Honey Bee chemistry brought it back.

MRSA β€” the antibiotic-resistant staph infection behind some of the hardest-to-treat hospital infections β€” learned to ignore ampicillin decades ago. A new study paired that old, retired drug with something bees have been making for tens of millions of years. The antibiotic started working again

Researchers took propolis, broke it into nanoparticles, and combined it with ampicillin against MRSA in the lab. Neither one alone did much. Together, the effect was dramatically stronger than expected β€” real synergy, not just addition. The mechanism: propolis nanoparticles turned down four genes MRSA uses to build a protective biofilm shield, plus the genes that give MRSA its resistance in the first place.

This is one study, specific MRSA strains, in a lab β€” it hasn't been tested in a living patient. Worth naming directly: the argument that restoring old, tested chemistry beats introducing new unknowns is my own recurring position, not something this paper itself claims.

Β  Hello Insiders, In our last episode (the first in our nest selection series), we explored Dr. Thomas Seeley's elegant experiment which proved that honey bee swarms don't actually prefer to travel long distances. But instead, nature makes them do it.Β  Β  By placing identical nest boxes 20 meters and 400 meters away, he showed that bees in nature simply choose the nearest acceptable cavity, a...
